I am limiting my response to a couple of statements you made:
All this argument about abortion is really a waste of time. NONE OF US

Well, there are certain posts here that make me wonder... :-)
I'm not a member of an endangered species, but I have opinions about
them. I'm not a sailor, but I can have an opinion on naval defense.
I'm not a child, but I support protecting children. I am not in a
nursing home, but have opinions about them. I am not a soldier, but
I have an opinion about Iraq. I have never been a slave, but I have
an opinion on slavery.
That is a bogus argument.
I understand what you are saying Howard, but I think this is a "special
case"... Here's why I think that:
In all of the examples you cite above, your opinion about it doesn't change
it. (It could if you join an action group and try to get some particular
policy implemented, but simply having an opinion about it doesn't affect it,
and we all have a right to our opinions, in a free society.) Most
importantly, you COULD be involved in any of the situations you outline and
the arguments could therefore apply to you.
However, when it comes to abortion or giving birth, ANY opinion held by
non-participants is simply muddying the water. It would be like you having a
strong opinion about who should be the Mayor of my local council. You are a
non-participant. That doesn't mean you can't have an opinion, but if there
was a heated political debate going on here (...that's an amusing idea...
:-)) any contribution you made would be seen as inflammatory by those
opposed to it, and pointless by those in favour, because you cannot vote...
In all of your examples above you have as much right to an opinion as anyone
else, (because you are a possible participant) but when it comes to a
process that ONLY women can undergo do you (or any of us) still have the
same moral right?
I don't think so, (but I agree it is arguable.)
But lots of women are anti-abortion. Women are as split on this
issue as men are.
Yes, but the difference is that they have a right to argue it; the rest of
us, in my opinion, don't.
Pete.
