I think you touched on something else I missed, too. Namely, he may be

How big is a "block" these days 4K... more...less...?
Don't ask me, no one will give me a job on big iron any more.
Their loss, Mate... their loss...

Thanks Pete but you are beginning to sound like my nagging brother
(who can not accept that I might actually know something about
automobile mechanisms). I do use jobserve. And, despite age
discrimination legislation in the UK, have been subject to the "you're
too old for them. Of course they wouldn't phrase it that way but...".
That sounds like the bloody pimps making evaluations they have no right to
make.
Don't go into agreement with it. If YOU think you're too old, and YOU think
it matters, then you are, and it does.
Remove your date of birth from your CV; it is illegal for them to ask it and
if they do, lie... :-)
Make sure you are looking your best when you front for an
interview...haircut, good night's sleep, clean clothes, but most important
of all, get your head in the right space. Be positive and use your age as an
advantage... Go in with the attitude that they have problems you can help
them with,... they need you. (Not vice versa...)
I remember one of the senior managers I reported to saying to me once, when
he incidentally found out my age: "You know, Pete, you're old enough to be
my father." (He wasn't being unkind, it just struck him as "odd" and anyway,
it was true :-))
My response?
"Don't think of me as "old", think of me as wise and experienced. And any
more cheek and I'll cut off your allowance...:-)"
I could go back there and work for him any time.
Alistair, I'm not nagging you, it just seems a pity to me that the skills
you have are going to waste because you've been beaten down by pimps into
believing you are unemployable. You most definitely are not.
If you don't want to work, or you're happier working on cars, or whatever,
that's fair enough; but to let these noxious little arseholes control your
life is certainly not the option you should go for.. :-)
If you want to work in IT, you definitely can.
Remember, the response above is not a "nag", it is in response to the
statement: "Don't ask me, no one will give me a job on big iron any more."
I see that as a pathetic waste of skill and talent.
Pete.
