Now suppose only one of the men is *lying*, and the other three are
telling
the truth. Who's the culprit this time?
An interesting question...
Lets re-interpret the truth table...
statement A B C D
Abe 0 1 0 0
Bert 0 0 0 1
Charlie 1 1 0 1
Dan 1 1 1 0
If three of them are telling the truth, we need a column containing 3 true
values. The only column that qualifies is Bert's. As Bert's is also the
only
row that has a zero in the B(ert) column, we can safely conclude that Bert
is a criminal and a liar... :-)
And my approach was, again, to examine the contradictory statements from
Bert
and Dan, one of which must be false. Hence one of them must be the liar,
not
Abe or Charlie, so Abe's telling the truth when he says Bert did it.
Yes, he is, but so are Charlie and Dan...
That follows directly from the given condition that there is exactly one liar
among the four.
the table approach makes sure that
ALL the statements are included.
... and so does deductive reasoning as applied above.
