It is common for CLC postings to state a conclusion, unsupported byRobert,
facts/premises and
the canons of logic, much less citations. In those cases, added qualifiers
doesn't change
the opinions' essence, they just make the writer sound like a bureaucrat.
You may work that way, but it is my impression that the majority of those who
post and read CLC simply don't work this way. (It is was also my experience in
the business world - but that is now quite out-of-date).
When an opinion is posted and qualified as an opinion it is treated as such and
readers seem to have little problem dealing with it as such (no matter what
other explanations are given or not given).
When an opinion is stated as a "fact" or "general" rule(e.g.
"Nearly all government agencies have gotten rid of mainframes."
and no qualification, explanation, or whatever is given, then it seems to me
that most of those who post responses treat this as an (erroneous) "fact" and
not as an opinion or statement of what an individual's experience has been.
Similarly when statements are made about" how businesses work" or "what
mainframers do" without the simple qualification of "how most of the business
that I have worked at recently work" or "what those mainframers that I worked
with 8 years ago did", then the statements are treated as if you were stating a
"universal truth" which is not what (hopefully) you are trying to convey.
If you (RW) could understand this common reading within CLC (common - not
universal - as I perceive it), then I rally think that many of your posts would
receive better reception and would be read for content and YOUR OPINIONS would
be discussed as such.
Until you join the way that most posters post within this forum, I will
certainly continue to complain about your style - and I think that there are
others who take what they view as more appropriate negative action.
This is an open forum, so you certainly can do what you want, but I keep saying
this because I think (but could be mistaken on this) that you would like as many
readers of CLC to read your posts for content. It seems to me that a relatively
simple change in style would achieve a significant change in reaction to many of
your posts. As I have suggested this (repeatedly) in the past, I don't hold
much hope for it, but I will continue to suggest it as long as you continue to
use (what appears to me) to be an unproductive and unusual (bordering on unique)
style of CLC posts.
