I would never consider writing such code as in this example. Code should
be written to be as simple and easy to understand as possible, and this
example violates that principle. Using two statements would make the intent

Never mind that the Original Poster's question was 'What shouzld (sic) be
displayed in various compatible modes?', of course. I'm sure that would
go over quite well in a tech interview:
'Here's one of our Production programs... what should be displayed in
various compatible modes?'
'I would never consider writing such code.'
'Thanks much... next, please.'
