Yes, indeed it did. The Eocene Epoch is one such period.

colder.

And that is, of course, exactly my point: periodic warming and cooling -- to
much greater extents than what has been observed in the last century -- is a
normal cycle for the planet, that has been going on for much longer than human
beings have been around.
