Anyway, just think about it. If this were not the case, the sentence
would have no meaning at all. What kind of "sign" is a "young woman"
conceiving a son and giving him a name, be it "Immanuel" (God is with
us), or anything else? Such names have always been common throughout
Jewish history. In New Testament times, for example, there were lots
of people with the name "Jesus" (savior).
I'm curious - this prophesy included the name Immanuel - but everybody
calls him Jesus. Was that usual for people to be known by
nick-names back then?
Sure. Jesus called "Simon," "Peter" (Greek 'petros': small stone), and
named James and John, "Boanerges" which means "Sons of Thunder"
(Mark 3:16,17). "Jesus" is a slightly different form of "Joshua," a way
similar to "James" and "Jimmy."
The importance of the name "Immanuel," IMO, is that it means "God is
with us." In His life here, Jesus was, literally and physically, God with us.
So, Jesus' incarnation was a literal fulfillment of the name "Immanuel."
When the Bible speaks of God "giving a name" it has a far deeper
meaning and significance than our names have for us today. For God,
the name is the embodiment of whoever/whatever is being named. In
Philippians 2:9 where it says God (the Father) has given Jesus (the Son)
"a name which is above every name" it means Jesus has been given
authority and exaltation above all creation, which clear from the text.
Clearly, any tract from the bible can mean whatever you want it to
mean. Your quote from the bible should be taken literally otherwise
you are deriving dubious meaning where there is none. The messiah
clearly hasn't arrived yet.
