I would value Pete's judgement mor ehighly on religious matters than I
would yours, simply because he has looked beyond the narrow pale in
front of you. You don't have to be religious to have spiritual
feelings/knowledge.
Many people feel the presence of God. Even people in other faiths report the same phenomena. I used to chat with a Buddhist monk
up in the Himalayas who reported the same awareness during meditation. He didn't call it the presence of God; it was a serenity
and clarity that brought peace and a realization of the Oneness of all thngs. He had never read the Holy Bible. Why am I not
convinced? Actually, I am... I realize that these spirtual experiences are very real for the people who have them. But there are
people who swear they were abducted by aliens or spoke with Elvis (recently), or saw ghost ships on the ocean, or collapse in
rapture during religious meetings. We are complex creatures.
I don't doubt that Buddhist monk had a spiritual experience. God is not
the only spirit. Satan and demons are also spirits.
That is so arrogant that you should be ashamed of your self. Your
comment is one of the most arrogant and self-obsessed comments that
self-righteous christians make. You bring shame upon yourself and your
professed religion (I doubt that you would considered a true christian
by many as a result of the comments that you have passed on this
newsgroup).
I
know these things as surely as I know anything. And I know that the
Holy Spirit who gives me assurence that God loves me also gives me
assurance that the Bible is God's Word.
How do you know it isn't Satan winding you up, so you'll indulge in unwinnable arguments on Usenet? :-)
Because Satan would never glorify the name of Jesus Christ.
And that is where you make another big mistake. Doesn't Satan tell you
what you want to hear? From Macbeth:
<QUOTE>
Oftentimes, the forces of darkness tell us simple truths in order to
betray us in deepest consequences.
</QUOTE>
The
Spirit living in me does glorify the name of Jesus. Did the spirit in
the Buddhist monk glorify Jesus? :-)
Probably he did. Jesus is considered by Buddhists to be another great
religious teacher on a par with the Buddha.
You really should read up on other religions.
It really doesn't matter. Should I waste my life in fear and trepidation of what will happen after it? Or should I embrace
religion and get myself a guarantee I'll be OK, then waste my life persuading others how right I am?
What others think is irrelevant. If there is a God, then the issue is
between God and each individual.
I'm glad that you agree with my comments above.
I do not want that for anyone, and I don't want to stand before God
and hear Him say "Jud, if you had persevered longer, Pete Dashwood
(or someone else reading these threads) would have accepted Jesus
and be standing beside you now."
That would be in the long line at the back of the LDS, right? :->Please don't confuse LDS or Jehova's Witnesses with Christianity.
They deny many basic tenets of Christianity, specifically who Jesus
is and other related issues. You can't be a Christian and deny who
Christ was;
Many christians have less strict views as to who/what jesus was
compared to you. I don't know which variety of christian you profess
to being but there are christians out there who have beliefs about
christ that would make your blood boil.
Not least the very credible notions that he was gay or (heaven forbid)
married!
OK, so at what point do you give up and let them choose "condemnation"?
If it were only you and I involved here, that would have been quite a
while back. :-)
You're not keeping on here just for lil ol' me are you?
I've been thinking about how best to disengage. Considering that from
the beginning of these threads, I've been essentially only replying to
others' comments or questions on my comments, I'm not sure how
best to do that. Should I simply stop responding? A unilateral cease
fire seems a bit one-sided, don't you think? :-)
We could call a truce and give Bill some of his bandwidth back?
Interested? I'll stop if you will.
email me on alistair@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx if you want to stop.
My point is that, when someone suffers martyrdom rather than
renounce their faith, that faith must be rock solid. You don't build
a rock solid reliable construction on ambiguity, you must build it
on something that is definite and solid (Matthew 7:26).
So muslim martyrs have a rock solid faith too?, based not on
ambiguities but on solid and definite somethings (presumably
fundamental beliefs).
A faith
based on a patchwork of beliefs selected arbitrarily from a menu
is the an of definite and solid.
If I were to be a christian then I would believe in the word as
preached by the bible. IIRC, that includes sacrificing one's children,
committing incest, allowing one's daughters to be raped to protect a
guest in one's house....
Selection implies rejection of that not selected. God's Word is a whole,
not a menu. Jesus said we live by "every word of God" not "some words
of God" (Matthew 4:4).
And that would mean living by the words of the OT as well as the NT
yet you have, in this thread, denied the OT.
I got bored with the rest of the post.
