So why are we not building solar energy power stations. The principles
are already established and there is plenty of desert land to build
upon, although that will introduce further problems (maintenance where
vegetation grows in the shade of solar panels).

Solar power is very expensive. It does not work at night, invoking the
problem of storage, which is also expensive and inefficient. It is also
greenhouse negative for at least 3 years, because of the energy required
to produce all the gear involved.

Solar sourced energy can be stored in liquid sodium vats. Also, the
sun is always on somwhere in the world.

The cost of building a solar generating system that would produce a
substantial portion of our energy needs would bankrupt the world
economy, and create environmental side effects the likes of which
no one has seen or contemplated. The concept is just not practical.
Far better to use secondary effects like wind and tide generators
where they're practical, and generously fund a "Manhattan Project"
type effort to develop fusion energy, then we'll be done with energy
production concerns for a thousand years. Be good idea to look at
energy distribution as well.

I think the world economy could afford solar arrays as the do nothing
approach is not acceptable. If we did create fusion reactors I wonder
how long it would be before we were all walking around talking in
squeaky voices?
