How badly will the USA be affected by sea level rise? I ask because I
have seen maps showing how badly the UK will be affected (and they
vary quite substantially).
So they will, because of the uncertainty of the magnitude of the rise. But
consider Florida: the fiurther south you go the lower the land is. Great
parts of the state are less than three meters above mean sea level. They
are already in peril of storm surges. If the base level goes up a meter or
two - you get the picture. Consider New Orleans. Or consider New York
city: as a harbour it's AT sea level.
I can't give you any sort of complete answer. Do the google maps show
contours? Then anything less than - say - five meters is in danger.
PL
In the long term it is anywhere below 200 feet (some believe three
feet).
In 120 years, since 1880s, sea level has risen 20 cm = 7 inches.
Projections for the next 92 years, until 2100, range from 20 cm to 60 cm, 7 inches to 2
feet.
"Analogy to past climate states, suggests that a warming of ~3°C, such as is anticipated
by 2100, would be sufficient to cause 4-6 m of sea level rise (Overpeck et al. 2006).
However, such changes may take a millennium to be fully realized."
