Along with the GUI however, IBM provided several ISPF services that
are extremely useful, if little known. Among other things, the
services allow you to transfer files between your workstation and the
mainframe at FTP-like speeds.
IND$FILE?
You can also set it up to transparently
edit mainframe files using a workstation editor, or vice versa.
Pretty cool stuff...but one of ISPF's best-kept secrets.
Truth be known, if I'm editing mainframe source I'm most comfortable with
ISPF Edit; if I'm doing something on the PC I'll use one of those
newfangled programs like WordStar 3.3.

No, not IND$FILE. The service is called FILEXFER. It works by
establishing a separate (ie not via your emulator) connection to your
workstation. IND$FILE is just a screen scraper.
You can also edit work station files using the ISPF editor. ISPF
takes care of the uploading/downloading for you automatically.
