Along with the GUI however, IBM provided several ISPF services that
are extremely useful, if little known. Among other things, the
services allow you to transfer files between your workstation and the
mainframe at FTP-like speeds. You can also set it up to transparently
edit mainframe files using a workstation editor, or vice versa.
Pretty cool stuff...but one of ISPF's best-kept secrets.
I never figured out how to do that - although my motivation was low -
I liked the ISPF editor. And my windows editor does FTP to the
mainframe anyway - but why would I want to use it to edit source code?
I like the ISPF editor too. That's why I like to edit workstation-
based text files using ISPF.
It is not difficult to use. The only pre-requisite is to download the
free Workstation Agent (WSA) program that is supplied with ISPF and
install it on your workstation.
One of the things that I like most about it is that you can write Rexx
programs on the mainframe to initiate file transfers and to execute
Windows commands on your workstation.
I wish we'd had this available back when we were using Micro Focus
Workbench to develop mainframe applications. We relied on IND$FILE to
transfer source code to the mainframe. WSA would have made that way
easier, and much faster.
