Hi Pete. Sounds like you know your way around this issue. Am I stuck?

Let's hope not.

I've checked out how their Licensing works and it is similar to what I
recall of Fujitsu, but not quite as stupid. (You don't need to transfer to a
floppy...maybe you don't with Fujitsu these days either... let's hope so.)
Also, MF have documented the process extremely well.

As the version running on your original machine is still licensed, you can
legitimately revoke that license and transfer it to the new machine. Your
question was: "How do I do the second step?"

Here's the answer:
http://www.microfocus.com/000/RevokingLicensesonWindows_tcm21-7985.pdf

I found this to be a very well written document. It is clear and uses
screenshots to good advantage. You should read it through then do it.

Basically there are two parts:

1. You get a Revoke Key string (issued by their server), using the key you
have.
2. You use this key to get a new key for the new machine.

As they explain it...
"Record and save the Revoke Key string for submission with your request for
a new Response Key to unlock your product. Use the Request/Obtain License
selection in the Self-Service menu of the SupportLine web site to request
the replacement Response Key. Alternatively, an e-mail message containing
your company name and location, your product serial number, the Request Key,
and the Revoke Key strings can be sent to URK@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx In either
case, an e-mail will be returned containing your new Response Key which is
used to unlock the product."

I think they could have put the link into the above, but then, it could be
subject to change. It's already out of date because there is no
"Self-Service" option on the site. Anyway, I ran it down for you...
http://supportline.microfocus.com/license_request.asp?prod=NX&type=Reqrev

This form works for most License-related activities. Just use the "Request
type" box near the bottom to get a Revoke Key, then use that key with the
same form but different Request Type, to get the Response key you need.

Hope this helps.

[Aside to Jimmy]: You should be able to use this form to get a replacement
key for your corrupted one. You probably have your original key noted
somewhere... I'd revoke that, then use the Revoke Key to get a new key, and
re-install. Actually, thinking about how the process works, if you are
re-installing onto the same machine, the same original key should work fine.
You don't need to get it re-issued. DONT re-install until you are absolutely
sure your machine is clean... :-) [/Aside]

I used MF exclusively, just as you did for DOS based applications, and
Windows 3.1 when it arrived. You probably remember PANELs and early DIALOG?
Despite the ups and downs of the company over the years, their products
were, and are, generally excellent. I was very keen to get into OO COBOL as
soon as I heard it was becoming available (but I had to save up... :-)). I
was just about to purchase VISOC (Visual Object COBOL) when they withdrew
all support for it in favour of the NetExpress product, thereby shafting
everyone who had bought it. At the same time Fujitsu offered a FREE OO
COBOL compiler

I've been using MicroFocus on PCs since it was COBOL2 in the early 80's.
I
recently ran across COBOL2 manuals in my garage - I finally threw them
away.

I'm keeping mine for a project I have in mind when I retire... :-)

I'm responsible for hundreds of work stations running legal copies of
WorkBench. More recently, as the applications have moved to newer
versions
of NetExpress, end users are now paying run time licenses. I've helped
MicroFocus make many thousands of $.

Bet you're sorry now... so are all those people sandbagged into paying for
the right to run something they already bought (or thought they did...)

Now that I'm retired and living
frugally, they want me to buy a new copy - to bring my maintenance
up-to-date would actually cost more.

No, Paul, they will stand by legitimately licensed products people have
bought. You should be able to revoke your key and get a new one. Of course,
they'd PREFER it if you bought another copy...:-)

If you find they won't revoke your key, THEN you have a right to hit the War
Path. Let's cross that bridge if/when we come to it. I don't think it will
happen.

Maybe my only option is to communicate
with someone at the VP level or higher.

Well, at the moment they have a pretty useful guy running the show, so we
could hope he is making his influence felt in the attitude and style of the
people reporting to him. I wouldn't bother him with this. While it is really
important to you, he has other priorities. This should be an option of
absolutely last resort. As for getting ot a VP, usually difficult unless you
know somebody, and really only an option of last resort. These are very busy
people; give their assigned managers a chance to sort it first...

Any easier suggestions? TIA, Paul

Yes. See above.

Pete.
