Sorry for not replying earlier.
I agree that the current OpenCOBOL "system" (installation and use) is targeted
at Linux (or Unix) users who know (and love) C.
There are a couple of things that I can say in "defense" of this:
1) If you are using OC to develop a production "system", the chances are that
you are doing so for a Linux/Unix and NOT a Windows environment. Therefore,
you need to know most of this stuff any way.
2) Most "open source" projects are targeted to those in the Linux (or Unix)
environment and, therefore, they don't really think about providing tools for
those not familiar with them.
* * * *
You *might* want to look at the COBOL-IT "derived" version of OC. I think it
may "better" bundle and provide more "user-friendly" stuff for the non-Linux
COBOL person. However, it doesn't (always) keep up with all the syntax support
added to OC.

mr. klein.
a few months ago i attempted to install open-cobol via your instructions...
with no luck at all. tonight; different story. i'm not a linux user and a
few of your instructions seemed predisposed to linux gurus, but i managed to
figure them out. i ran all the tests, including the test that had to be
downloaded, and everything worked fine. so; thanks for your help. there is
absolutely no way that i could have figured this out on my own.
i have a wish list all ready. there should be a batch file equivalent in
linux... the search begins after a few hours sleep. and i'll require an
open-cobol programmers guide; again after some sleep.
just how much time did you spend figuring this stuff out?
thanks again.
