But there surely has to be an easier way without going to individual applications, to Add or Remove them from the Startup Menu. I either misunderstood what MS were saying, or their Help is badly worded. Any takers ?

Doug, thanks for the link to XPMyths. There's a lot of good information there too.
Recently, my company laptop had some performance problems, and the two things that helped the most were 1) doubling the memory from 1 gig to 2 gig, and 2) defragging the hard disk with the built-in WinXP defragger (which is pretty slow).
I am generally avoid editing the registry, but Microsoft TweakUI for WinXP a handy tool.
