append to file

I have 6 edit boxes that contain info i want to save in a textfile, each
time the boxes are updated i want to append this to the same file and
also keep count of how many lines i have. The problem is i have no idea
how to create, open and write to the file or how to assign a path to a
file, any help appreciated.
