That raises questions. For instance when did programming languages in
general develop loops and subroutines (and functions) ? I wouldn't punish a
language for not having features before the features were generally
available in the development of programming languages. Fortran was in the
early 50's while Basic began in the early 60's.
Also, Basic is based on Fortran while as was said Pascal is based on ALGOL.
But what is Fortran based on and what is ALGOL based on ? What was the first
high-level langauge with a commercial or academic following ?
Finally, rate the relation of langauges by their distance apart on a family
tree of high-level language...
