Writing screen scraping applications.

I know this might be a longshot since the topic is rather touchy but I have
been asked by a client so I figured I would pose it here prior to figuring
out my solution.

My client has asked for a toolbar of sorts that he can use on his
application. This application is used to track trading scheme for market
conditions and was written for him by another development house.

He would like this toolbar of sorts to be able to read the excel like
display of the application and then send that information to his access
database application. Long story short, he has quite a few applications.

In order to complete the task under a suitable budget number it becomes
neccessary to write an application that will screen scrape another window.
In this I was planning on using Delphi and the WIN Api to accomplish this.
I think this is possible knowing the limited bit I do know about the api.

Does this sound like any other common place task that might be helpful in
reading up on such a delphi to win api type documentation? Might anyone
suggest a resource such as a site or book on delphi and win API? I hate
buying duds.

Thank you!
