You think? Heh. My knowledge of human behavior suggests otherwise.
Obviously, of course, the company sells product, or they wouldn't stay in
business. The question is, how many more would they sell if they allowed
download of a nag-screen .dcu for testing purposes?
Considerably more, I'd bet.

One wonders why they would opt for they buy-then-try sales model if their
confidence was all that high. Are they afraid a few of us will plop a RET or
two into the .dcu file and use it without paying?
Maybe a few will, but what's to prevent a few from using the product after a
refund? I can see no rationale for buy-then-try, little to be gained, but
much to gain from try-then-buy, source furnished upon purchase.
I'm not implying they're dishonest or sell a bad product. I'm saying I don't
see the virtue of their sales model from a business perspective.
On the other hand, while I won't fault anyone who distributes free software
(including source) and encourages donations, I'm not advocating this either.
I think the testable control with an application "Unregistered" popup screen
is the ideal middle ground.

It has nothing to do with budget. I'm spending thousands of dollars worth of
time to test a few hundred dollars worth of controls, and would dearly love
to use an excellent, easy-to-use third party treeview and editor. I'll spend
$1000 without blinking for a truly excellent editor.

The Dream TreeView seems to perform very well, with a couple of minor
exceptions. (My SaveToFile code is ten times faster than theirs. File size
twice as large as the penalty, but one I'm willing to pay.) The only
downside is lack of BiDi. If their editor is as good, though, I may order
it.
I never say never except when saying I never say never, so I may try the
DevExpress... but I doubt it. I didn't see an editor control (extended RTF,
etc.) on their site, either.
