I've been letting the builders turn on and off the power supply to my house
with no issues.

That click you hear when you shut the machine down is the heads parking
themselves (and thumping the end stop in the process). I trust them

1. I use NTFS
2. I currently have a Delphi program which is keeping my two drives in sync.

Surge protectors are your friend.

Ahh... now I wouldn't turn them on and off *that* much. One cycle a day max
for me.

My monitor has a broken power button for that reason. Luckily, it's
permanently on!

Old hard disks that have been running 24/7 for 15 years: The start-up load
to spin the disks up is far higher than the constant load. So they'll run
and run and run, but when the disk spins down, it'll never spin back up
again. Seen this in some telecomms equipment & servers.
