where is the profit if I build an opensource application?
Please read http://www.catb.org/~esr/writings/magic-cauldron/
basicly the profit results from installing and maintaining instead of selling software. If You have started a project, You will have a knowlegde return from other users/programmers, which makes Your software better and more stable, than You could make it alone. The price is, that You have to share the market with other people, but normally the sell there service to customer You could never reach.
My SerialNG (http://www.domis.de/serialng.htm) component (API wrapper for serial interface adapter), is a small example of that strategy. 5000+ Downloads per Year, and hundreds of feedbacks how to solve problems. So my (sold) applications run highly stable and this minimize my personal overall costs significant.
