The Kro$oft steamroller does'nt give opponents a chance, but I think that
Borland/Inprise also has a responsability in the waning you describe.
Do you remember Turbo Pascal, and the first releases of Delphi ?
The policy was by that time to offer cheap development tools to students and
professional users.
Now look at the bill when you purchase the latest version : the old price
has increased tenfold !
Then compare with Visual Basic cost and make your choice.

Personnaly, I could also add that .NET features are of no interest to me.
I develop softwares for industrial applications. I'm more interested in
functionnalities like good reporting tools, hardware and system support
(USB, OLE ....) than in Web applications. Many users are probably
disappointed when they discover that their brand new Delphi can't do as much
as the old D6 or D7.
