Hi Andrew
From a management point of view the current methods do not scale.
They do not have to.
Yahoo Groups is fine if you have a single developer on a project.
Making use of SourceForge's SVN feature would improve the collaboration
on the Fastcode Library when multiple developers are involved.
Only 2 are doing B&V releases and spreadsheet release. Jouni and I and we
have no problems with the current approach.
Yahoo Groups works fine so far for everything except the Fastcode
Library.
No. The library has only one developer and there is no need to use anything
but the current methods. Just download from our site.
If you want to keep the group small then stay with Yahoo Groups.
We will on the B&V's, the spreadsheets and the library. One responsible
person on each to maximize quality control. Having 10 or more persons to
release minor changes and make 100's of small releases is likely to reduce
overall consistency and quality and make a lot of noise. It is - IMHO- much
better to have one reponsible and dedicated person on each piece. He can off
course receive hints and help from many people like now. It is very good for
quality to discuss all details as needed in an open forum like this.
careIt can be no easier for users than the way it is now. All you have to
about is navigating one very simple site.
http://fastcode.sourceforge.net/
That's only one way to get to the site.
Searching "fastcode" on Google:
1) www.fastcodeproject.org
Hit no 1 is the correct one - whow that is easy ;-)
If you search on SourceForge you go to sf.net/projects/fastcode
and get the main SourceForge project page which says there are no files
released by this project.
This place should never have been created, like our site should never have
moved from www.fastcode.dk. These actions where done in fewer without proper
discussion and without a common goal.
As it is now, the library is in 4 places (developer's pc, developer's
web site, yahoo groups, Fascode web site) and only 1 is current.
It should never have been release at the developers website.
You can get down to 2 places. The developer PC and a public place.
This was how it worked for me when I did all the B&V's and my wife did the
website.
Then we started working more people on the B&V's and we needed a place to
interchange file - Yahoo.
We take care of propagating all the releases to the website and this is done
regularly. No need for users to be concerned about anything but the website.
I have read several postings in the newsgroup saying to change this,
change that, use this file found here...
Which is only relevant for us who works on the project.
Use SF's SVN and then all files related to the library can be found in
one place.
And users should navigate a source control system and we have now offered a
clean site. I would as user prefer a systematic, dedicated website.
SourceForge says: "this project has not released any files".
on SF you can release multiple versions of the library and use SVN as
the current "playground".
Please somebody delete this ghost.
Best regards
Dennis
