Hi, Harry, As a professional consultant-one-man-band-do-anything contractor,
I aggressively search all the major job engines. In fact most of the main
engines have search agents that email me daily on any new hits. And the
simple fact is there is 1 to 10 new delphi opportunities somewhere in the
United States each week. (note: all my research is US-oriented, so
apologies in advance those outside the US)

It is possible to input "Delphi" on the widest possible search criteria to
try to get 80+ hits, but bear in mind that some of the hits will be posts of
more than two weeks old and some will be dupes. And of course some will
refer to the down of Adelphi, Maryland and some will refer to Delphi
Automotive.... etc...

Given the small number of new Delphi oppportunities that emerge each week,
it is very easy for anyone who is truly interested to know exactly what is
happening nationwide with very little effort. So these types of
(sub)threads are not really necessary. Will and Eric are feeling a little
emotional at the moment; and so they are exaggerating (slightly).

But anybody expends just a little bit of effort will understand exactly
where delphi stands in the market place contrasted against it old rivals
(C/C++/VB/Java) and its new rivals (.NET syntaxes and various scripting
languages). This is very easy research to do. The data gets emailed to you
every morning. No need for conjecture.

Below is my email from DICE this morning for new Delphi opportunities
nationally waiting for me in my in-basket. At first glance it looks like a
bigger catch than usual, but a 2nd look tells me that there is one major
client in Lansing, MI who is hiring for a new project. Multiple recruiters
in Lansing have leaped into action ...

Here is the breakdown:

Testing:
PA : 2

Management
MA: 1

Software Developer:
NY: 1
MI: 1 (opportunity) (maybe up to 5 positions at same client)
GA: 1
NJ: 1 (listed, but no delphi mentioned; C# emphasized)

(note: living in the DC metro area, none of the above helps me; but I do
have the Washington Post as a local resours, I will posts its agent's email
below)

This is an *atypical* listing because it is slightly larger than usual...

I have some other agents, and there are some other sources, but you get the
gist. This is not to say that every single job anywhere in the US has been
captured, but I firmly believe tha most of them have. Anybody, seriously
trying to recruit the best developers they can will employ no-brainer
strategies to do it (like post on the search engines, job
hunters/consultants are using...)

Bottom-line: The Delphi job situation is grim. There are *some* opptys for
junior programmers, simply because many employers are cutting costs to the
bone, so when they ask for 2 years experience they don't mean "at least",
they mean maximum. So there is even hope for junior guys. But overall, the
"lion's share" of the opptys are geared towards developers with at least 5
years experience and possibly more. Note: in this job market I find that
its now possible to be *too* senior and have too much experience; and what
that usually boils down to is that, once again, clients can't/won't pay
"guru rates" because they don't have to.... In many situations I see rates
for top of the line developers going for $40/hr... Just a sign of the
market, nationally, not just the glut of delphi developers per job oppty.

So, although you can nit-pick Will's numbers, the spirit of Will's message
is clear and easily backed up with facts and analysis.

Don't bother disputing this analysis with me; but, anyone reading this is
free to register a rebuttal (of course!)....
