On the subject of which, have you tried Lookout? It's a facility to
search everything in Outlook (by which I mean e-mails, directories,
names, contacts, etc, etc.

It's VERY good and makes using Outlook a great deal easier. (I suffer
the same problem as you - I have years worth of accumulated e-mails).

It just got bought out by Microsoft but they're still giving it away
