It's not a beta. It's a preview of a version that is currently in beta.
The people who got the preview are not necessarily involved in the beta
test. It is just an opportunity for them to see what's coming and play
with it.
The preview is like a trial version, which typically is only 30 days. I
(and others) asked for more time than that, and that's why it was
longer than 30 days. I know lots of people attending BorCon have to
catch up on their regular work when coming back from it, so I wanted to
make sure they had time to enjoy the preview before it expired.

For betas, you're pretty close to right. Borland uses gammas after
betas.
