    If we follow your line of reasonning, then VCL was mistake and
    Borland should have offered us only MFC and a libc-based RTL.
    Yet, VCL, and using neither MFCs nor Visual Basic's runtime,
    quirks or "strength", is was what allowed Delphi to be.
    IMO if Delphi thrived, it wasn't by using MFC controls or OCX
    (even though you could use both), but by offering an alternative,
    upon which you could build (arguably) better components without
    sacrifing to performance and flexibility (ala VB) or ugly code
    (ala C++).

    Now, look at the bigger picture: what are the benefits of
    a Delphi.Net, beyond porting Delphi apps (and even that...)?
    Which C# shop is going to switch over to Delphi.Net? Why?
    Which VB shop is going to switch over to Delphi.Net? Why?
    Which C++ shop is going to switch over to Delphi.Net? Why?
    Which Java shop is going to switch over to Delphi.Net? Why?
    I don't see a strong case in any of these 4 cases.

    Yet, not all of Delphi Win32 users are going to Delphi.Net,
    a chunk is going Java, C# and even VB.Net, and the rest that
    cares about native compilation in the long term is left
    looking at C++.
    Oh, Delphi can survive maybe forever by catering to the needs
    of a few, but without offering a strong alternative to VS
    and MS APIs, it will just wither away into a niche IMHO.
