Very true...

A couple of years ago, I went back to my engineering school (in France) and
was not really surprised to see that Borland had completely disappeared in
favour of Microsoft.

When I was a student there (early 90s), we used to use Borland's products,
but nowadays they have completely switched to Microsoft. After all, they are
given all the course material, which they can then adapt for the purpose of
the course they want to teach. Surely, that makes their life much easier.

The end result is pretty obvious: the students know about Microsoft products
(and others in other fields of computing), but not about Borland ones...

The amazing thing is that we keep mentioning it to Borland, but they don't
seem to realise that to get a bigger share of the market, they have to
invest in academic solutions. At my university, I can get everything from
Microsoft for the cost of the medium (i.e. CD/DVD). For Borland, I have to
pay for the academic price, which is still several magnitudes higher than
what I have to pay for Microsoft softwares. The crazy thing, though, is that
I am still sticking with Borland... maybe because I have been educated with
its tools?... (sarcasm)
