Nick, I will have to admit that I am no business person at all (eh, I am in
academia after all! :)). This said, you see businesses taking "risks" all
the time. I remember the time when Borland was thinking of changing their
name to Inprise. There were some discussions on Borland's newsgroups and,
unless I overlooked them, nobody said it was a great idea. As it happens, we
were all wondering the rationale behind that change and as it happens, we
were right, since that decision has since been reverted.

My point, again, is that some of the most successful businesses have had the
guts of following their instinct or trying daring ideas at some point or
another.
