Larry,

I understand your outlook on delphi, and I have a longterm view as well,
having used their tools since TP 1983. I actually look at Delphi from two
perspectives... that of my employer and what they need, and as a independent
developer since I develop software separate from my day job.

In my personal case, I only need the Pro SKU, and only use Delphi... so
$399 a year for an upgrade is a better deal than $1000 for SA. Also,
borland has a history like the trek films... except the opposite... all even
numbered trek flims are better and all ODD numbered delphi releases are
usually the solid performers... D3, D5, and D7 were all great tools... but
D2, D4, and D6 were kinda also rans. So im not even upgrading every year.
Everything on paper for D2005 looks great... but its lack of printed doc,
various glitches, and context sensitive IDE make it a longer learning
experience to see if D2005 will be the rightful successor to D7 or not.
The more I play the more I learn, but D2005 doesnt give a good initial
experience at all. The new doc layout works really well for someone who at
least knows what their trying to do... but its next to useless in easily
seeing what the tool is capable of in the first place.

Over the years my employers needs have fluxuated... We purchased D1, D2, D3
C/S, and D5 Ent, mainly for the Oracle support in recent years... but with
the tightening of purse strings in recent years we only purchased D7 pro.
Its a real hard sell pushing D2005 with them, and so far I cant recommend
that they purchase it. I need to play with my copy alot more to see what
it really can do.
