Most of our current software development is done in Visual C++. We have people experienced in Turbo Pascal and Visual Basic, and will be hiring someone to do the bulk of Delphi programming. However, we have some fundamental questions to get us started on the correct path.
We recently got a Windows standalone application programming project that is currently written in Delphi 7.0 which needs updating. It uses no database backend and has no need to be web enabled. All application data is stored to an ASCII file.
1. What version of Delphi would you recommend that we purchase? We have looked at Delphi 7.0 Personal and Delphi 7.0 Studio Professional. However, it appears that the Personal version does everything we need--or am I missing something?
2. Seems that I read somewhere that Delphi 7.0 Studio Professional can use ActiveX controls, or do all components have to be VCL components?
3. Is there an advantage of moving instead to Delphi 8.0 or 2005? Note, however, we do not want to go to .NET. The installation overhead to install the .NET framework on the client computers would be a nightmare. Again, this is a Windows standalone application.
Thank you
