Did you know that the computers onboard the Space Shuttle use the venerable
IBM 360 architecture? The hardware is more recent, but they want an OS
which is as stable as possible. That architecture marked the first time
customers could move their programs from one model to another (prior to
that, each new mainframe had a different architecture, so needed all apps to
be rewritten from scratch!).

That would be like the original phone interface, where the human operator
knew everyone in town, and may know that Andy is having a meal at the diner.
