Yes, there's a lot of code 'out there' written by hobbyists (myself
included), much of which is poorly documented and of average quality - as
you've discovered. Yes, you need a bit of experience to pick the gems from
the dross - but there are still plenty of 'gems' even as freeware. However,
if it doesn't come with a decent demo and/or help file it's generally not
worth downloading.
Support is another issue. Unless it's commercial don't expect support, just
be grateful you have the code. I get so many emails that have very non
specific questions, or are unrelated to my components or are presumably
'translated' into English by some online translation tool but remain
unintelligible that I've pretty much given up replying to requests for help
for my freeware components. Unless it's about a specific bug or the
requester has shown that they've spent some time trying to understand the
component they usually just get a courteous reply saying I can't help.
