Actually - research, science, inventions - IOW human progress, has since
the dawn of man been slowed down by resistance from authorities.
I do not believe the wheel was greeted with a "wow!" at all. I more
think it was regarded "devil's work" or "black magic" and that it only
slowly was accepted. Not the least because you afterwards needed one
horse to transport what you before needed 5 horses for, meaning a lot
to those making a living out of breeding horses.
FTR, my comment was to Nick's post:

and means that while it is "patently obvious" to him, like the wheel is
to all of us, it may not be that to others.
