It doesn't have to be conscious to be difficult, BTW (if you are translating from a language you do not speak well, you do not consciously run through every word you know).

I was taught that for meanings to be fully exchangeable (bad expression, but I can't think of a better word right now), it takes a *very* long time, certainly far longer than a few seconds. But if you don't have many things to remember you do the conversion faster (although not necessarily well under stress). This is why your HN is easier than actual Hungarian :-) I'm not sure so that Joel Spolsky's is.
