Well, you've made an assertion, but you've done nothing to back it up. You
simply claim there will be less sales than otherwise.
Logically, there may be more sales (more people like the product and
purchase or upgrade), less sales (less people upgrade and the same purchase)
or the same number or value of sales (it all balances out).
I think the personal SKU is targeted more towards those who have never used
the product rather than those toying with an upgrade. Bear in mind that
(i) if you are a Delphi customer and seriously considering an upgrade, you'd
be concerned about what features are in the pro/ent/arch SKU, and you'd want
to use the architect SKU trial, which has been around for months. Personal
would be little help (particularly as it doesn't have refactoring, TDataSet,
etc)
(ii) If you did want to use the personal version to evaluate 2005, it would
be of little help and would not impress, for example, the lack of
refactoring
(iii) Delphi 2005 has been released for several months. Many customers got
Delphi 2005 on SA. People who were going to specifically purchase an upgrade
have had months to evaluate the architect SKU trial, and have presumably
made their decisions. Part of this decision is working out if they can
afford D2005 or not, and whether they are prepared to fork out for D2005 or
not.
(iv) The people who are still left considering an upgrade are pretty much
those who can't afford it or those who don't see the value in it. Now,
really, what's your problem with them using D2005 personal to do some
refactoring occasionally? It enhances their commitment to and appreciation
of Delphi and makes them want D2005 more, putting pressure on the company
internally to upgrade.
(iv) Turning from existing customers to potential new Delphi customers, you
have a variety of people: some may never have heard of Delphi, some might
have heard of it but not used it, some may have used it before or played
around with it before. Some might be decision makers in business, some might
be hobbyists (today) or students who down the line might turn into IT
professionals. What is the impact of leaving out refactoring? The magazines
that provide the personal SKU don't hype this feature. People may not be
aware of it. Overall, new users and people who may have used Delphi before
have less to be dazzled by. Sales are less than they would be.
Of course it's Borland's call, but I am by no means convined that leaving in
refactoring in the personal SKU would lead to less sales for Borland.
In fact, I would expect precisely the opposite.
But notice that I provided some justification for my expectation; you just
made an assertion without any backing or support.
