Version control system / physical check-in and check-out of files

Can anyone recommend a good VCS for:

1) Small DevTeams
2) With option of all files (+ history backups) stored on server
(except those for a project a developer currently is working on)

It doesn't as such have to integrate with Delphi.
(but perhaps with Windows Explorer.)

"2)" is because:
* I want to in the future only have to secure (physical) data
for one computer. (so, if e.g. going on vacation/whatever,
I could take some swapable and encryptable disks with me.
* It would also mean only one place to backup from!

(can anyone recommend further with regards to point 2?)
