It doesn't currently, though I read somewhere that there are plans to
include this feature in a future version.
After seeing how well copy-modify-merge works, I don't know why anyone would
use the check-out/check-in strategy. Copy-modify-merge can seem scary at
first, but in practice it is far better in my experience.

No, but for good reason. I imagine that this ability would be added when
support for locking is added, but I can't say for sure.
