Re: where will the action be ?

What do you think Borland should have done - a few years ago, armed with
different information, not committed to .net?

Provide and head for differentiating technology, rather than try on jump on MS's bandwagon with the rest of the sheeps? Give us another "Delphi revival", as in being the first to offer tools to develop fast and efficient applications without sacrificing code readability or taking RAD compromises (as in WinForms), as in a revamped VCL + 64 bit compiler.

How seriously do you think they'd be taken in the market, and where would
they be now?

How does being some secondary .Net development tools help? What are Delphi's advantages over VS in the .Net world?

I think the right thing then (unfortunately, because it was a lot of
resources tied up in this) was to dance to MS's tune and do Delphi/VCL.NET

It can only be trying to play catchup with MS. Under .Net MS controls the programming libraries, not just the OS and system APIs.

IIRC, they didn't announce they were doing Delphi.net till they'd spent
quite some time on it already, and 'everyone' was screaming for it.

Well, the .Net preview was in D7 wasn't it? If they have the same delays in maturing a 64 bit compiler as in maturing the .Net one, it doesn't look like they'll have 64bit support any time soon. And ad interim, VCL didn't get that revamp, and compiler technology-wise, Borland hasn't moved much as the .Net compiler isn't anywhere near able to compare to the Delphi 32 compiler performance-wise, and said 32 bit compiler has been losing ground over the years to C++ compilers. ECO and other library centric advances may be nice, but being niche products, they can't serve general development needs in the way a VCL or compiler advances could.
