I went to the afternoon seminar here in Chicago this week, and played
with my copy of the VMWare Workstation 5 last night. I'm deeply
impressed. VMWare itself installed with only one very minor issue - it
was looking for a C: drive, and I don't have one. I used a subst to map
my main F: drive to C:, and the install went fine from there,
installing properly on the F: drive.
Installing a guest OS within a virtual machine was very easy. I put in
a Win2k VM last night as a baseline, cloned it, and used the Windows
Update to patch the cloned version. I was able to browse the web,
download files, and even access my local network shares, with no
difficulty at all.
Now I'll be able to test how my programs, which are developed under
WinXP, will really look and function under Win2K. If I can track down
my Win98 CDs, I'll be installing a VM for that as well. I'm also
planning to install a Linux VM, so that I can finally tinker with Kylix.
VMWare Workstation is an extremely well-designed and slick bit of
software.
