I work on contracts for different people. I keep each client's development environment in a VMware VM. It's their "sandbox." I can install all databases and components related to that client and not affect others. Works out very nice.


I also use VM's to run my server applications. That way, if I need to rebuild the server, I can copy the VM to a temporary machine, rebuild the physical machine, and no re-configurations are necessary.

I know one guy that runs some server applications in a separate VM, like Exchange. If Exchange crashes, he can reboot the VM without affecting the other server processes.
