Re: Reaction to Q2 Warning

Oracle is my least favorite. Delphi would almost certainly die,
unless it can suddenly compile to an Oracle only box, or run under
their Application Server, etc.

I don't understand what you mean by this. Delphi supports Oracle databases; it doesn't have to run on anything but client machines connecting to an Oracle server. I'd bet at least 90% of these client machines are Windows.

Sun might at least make noise about providing a way to do Windows
desktop apps for Solaris Server boxes?

I don't understand what this means either. Solaris is an OS, Delphi won't run on Solaris; AFIAK, Sun doesn't sell a database so Delphi is pretty much useless for Sun. IMO, an acquisition by Sun has the highest likelihood of killing Delphi.

The amount of work that Sun would have to do to get Delphi to run on Solaris is way too much for them to do; especially when they are myopically focused on one language and one language only: Java. The best possible outcome I see for Delphi after a Sun acquisition is an open sourced Delphi like Open Office or NetBeans. So perhaps some here would actually want that; but I don't think that would be good for Delphi.

But they wouldn't take the
vicious glee in squashing Windows development tools that Oracle would.
In my opinion, of course.

Why would any company *pay* for a company just to destroy it unless they are trying to protect their existing products? I can't imagine that Oracle sees Borland tools as a threat to its development tools revenue stream; Borland tools would augment their revenue stream and give them a fighting chance against MS/IBM tools.

I just truly hope that more layoffs isn't seen as the answer. That's
one of the most shortsighted courses they could take, I think.

Sure. Personally, I hope Borland stays independent and retains its staff, but we'll see what happens.
