Re: The early years

John,

I thought about a good analogy, the restaurant one does not work for me. And
I found one, I think. In my garage :-)

I have a Audi 80 Avant TDI. Really old, 12 years! That's not a real problem.
No rust (how, it's impossible for that car to get rusty), the engine is ok,
everything runs fine. But I am really looking for a new one. There are
features I want, and I could add them only in a clumsy way into my old car.
Like calluar phone integration, air conditioning, navigation etc. And more
power, of course!

But the new Audis do not fit for me. Waaay to pricey, too slick (my old one
has black plastic at the bumper and the sides, so you don't see scratches
there, and the new ones are color like the rest of the car - or there is no
plastic there. Very annoying), not much larger, I don't need that much power
etc. etc. The most important point: The new Audi A4 and A6 are not that
reliable. I love my 80 because it needs almost no repair. Driving 10.000 km
(that should be something even in the USA) needs 10 gas breaks, that's all.
A little bit like a tank, washed too hot. And that's the feature I like
most: reliable like a hammer.

Imagine Audi would bring a SUV as the next version of my 80. I don't write
them that I expect this and this and this feature in the next version. I
simply stick with my not 100% perfect old car, and if I really need
something new, I look at BMW.

You can translate that 1:1 to Delphi for me. I don't understand how I can
use the new features, like ECO2, in my daily work. Yes, I attended the
DevTracks, I looked at the videos, I played with it. It simply seems that it
does not fit for me. Like a SUV or a truck or a Porsche. What I need is a
station waggon, reliable, with all the features making my old fashion of
developing (because this is what fits to my customers) more productive. And
just like with cars, I am a customer. Don't rely on me saying what I want or
need because I know that I am a) only one small customer, and b) if you
really build it, I will get it in 2007 - Delphi 2006 is defined and in
development. That's great because I want Borland to make money. But can I
drive that road with Delphi 5 two more years?

Ralf
