Re: Going back to Delphi 7

Most end-users don't even know what .Net is; Even fewer of them "require" it. Considering that I know of no Major application that is being slated to be .Net'ified, including Microsoft's own applications such as Office and SQL Server. I'm beginning to believe that .Net maybe nothing more than a curious footnote in 5 years or so.

I think we are seeing a repeat of 1987. That was the year when IBM decided to change the PC Bus standard. IBM was still the dominant player in the market in 1987, but by then the ISA Bus was a standard used by hundreds of manufacturers. These manufacturers and their customers had a combined interest in the ISA Bus that was larger than IBM's. IBM tried to force a change to the MicroChannel architecture; it didn't take because (at the time) it wasn't necessary. Within 3 years, IBM was a minor player in the PC Hardware business. I think Microsoft may be making the same mistake with .Net.

I'm not implying that Microsoft will become a minor player; I am saying that Microsoft has lost some control in setting the standards for Windows. It can't make radical changes in the architecture, because it will alienate a large portion of its base of customers whom will just simply stick with what they have because it still fulfills their needs.

So many computers are using the Win32 standard, that unless there is a pressing need to change to something else, it won't happen. There is no reason to move away from Win32. .Net isn't necessary and offers nothing that isn't available for Win32.
