I know they contribute to the open source community and report any
number of bugs (with steps to reproduce) to Microsoft. They also use
third party tools, and I can only assume they report problems when they
find them.

I rely on customers reporting bugs. Maybe we're slack, but we don't
catch everything in our internal testing. The same thing applies for
the software we use including compilers, commercial and open source
components and any number of other tools. If that software is worth
using, then it's worth helping the author fix problems that are getting
in our way. This could range from making a simple bug report to
reproducing the problem in a simple test case to finding the problem in
their code. And if the author has a quick fix or reasonable work
around, it helps my tight schedules.

It has nothing to do with generosity or wishful thinking. It's all
about making my life easier.
