Personally, I think Borland should provide free copies of Delphi Architect to universities. They could limit the license period of the software to make it valid for one year only so that it truly would be limited to a year of education only.
That way they'll be getting some extra mind-share. I don't believe they can expect to make money out of the education market. They should consider this more of a "marketing" thing.
Like you my university also used a _LOT_ of free stuff.
