When you're arguing about nothing, it's necessary to be very precise. :-)

0.999(bar) may be taken to mean 1, the limit of the set (a value that no
member of the set ever equals).

whereas
0.999... may be taken to mean the hypothetical last element of the
infinite set [0.9,0.99,0.999,etc.]. This is logically equal to

1 - 1/infinity
