For those of you interested, the bone marrow donor is a separate
register (certainly here in the uk), the op for the test is painful,
the op for the harvest even more so.

In the United States, your local blood donation center usually also conducts Bone Marrow screening. The test is not that painful (at least not in my experience), but it is expensive. You can often find someone willing to sponsor the cost of the test, around $70 USD the last time I checked. Once you're tested, you're on the list. It's a one time shot.


http://www.marrow.org/ is the US Marrow Registry site. There is a *lot* of good information at the site.

While the actual harvesting of bone marrow for donation is incredibly painful, how can you put a cost on saving another person's life? I highly encourage anyone, especially those of "minority" origins, to think seriously about registering in your local marrow registry. The odds of matching are slim, the potential benefits are enormous.
