Actually this may work against Borland more than the customer.From the past
two releases the initial product was not that stable.Hence the buyer may
decide to upgrade every two years/ three years rather than every year
through SA.If there were adverse comments he may not buy at all.How ever in
case of SA he buys the product every year & Borland is assured of fixed
income though of a lesser amount.More over there was only one full product
release every year in during the past two years & buyer of SA has no other
incentive except a substantially lower price of SA.
Hence it will be a better deal for Borland to price SA substantially lower
than upgrade price so that the buyer is tempted to go for SA .This is
compounded by the fact that there are no prior knowledge as to when the
product will be released i.e. Date of releases .
On the whole it is a tough decision for both Borland & the Customer to
decide which way to go
