Reading that, two main things strike me immediately.

1) Thank the gods for Object Pascal...umm...Delphi, which answers pratically
all of Kernighan's concerns.
2) Kernighan is complaining because Pascal doesn't have the (IMHO)
completely undesirable screwed-up foibles of C that blight that accursed
language*.

He ends with "In its pure form, Pascal is a toy language, suitable for
teaching but not for real programming."

It may be true of the most basic form of Pascal, but rather a toy language
than a hideous, pointer-infested, obfuscated, stupidly fragile mess, which C
in its pure form undoubtedly is.

*I speak as someone who spent years programming C and who thanks his lucky
stars almost every day that he's escaped to the green, green grass of Object
Pascal...umm..Delphi
